The history of the family of God at Concord is similar to other Churches. In 1916, sixteen believers gathered for prayer at the home of Sister Lydia Glover who resided at 14 Northfield Street, Boston, Massachusetts. Each of these individuals were inspired to serve God according to sound Biblical principles. The realization that the group needed a more established place to gather for worship, encouragement, outreach and missions led to the formation of what is now Concord Baptist Church of Boston. Concord Church has been blessed through the leadership and vision of six pastors since its founding: The Reverend William Dabbs 1920-1936 The Reverend Arthur J. Spratley 1938-1961 The Reverend Charles G. Adams 1962-1969 The Reverend James Coleman 1970-1981 The Reverend Owen Cardwell 1983-1986 The Reverend Dr. Conley Hughes, Jr. 1988-Present

In wis- dom you have made them all. The earth is full of your crea- tures…When you give them your breath, life is created, and you renew the face of the earth. May the glory of the Lord continue forever! The Lord takes pleasure in all He has made!” Job 10:10-12, NLT “You guided my conception and formed me in the womb. You clothed me with skin and flesh, and you knit my bones and sinews together. You gave me life and showed me your unfailing love. My life was pre- served by your care.” Psalm 100:3, NLT “Acknowledge that the Lord is God! He made us, and we are His. We are His people, the sheep of His pasture. John 9:18, NLT “The Jewish leaders still refused to believe the man had been blind and could now see, so they called in his parents.” The Origins of All Things – Lesson 18 helps us understand how we can obtain a new sense of God’s plan for our lives. The recognition of God as the Creator of all things is essential for thinking in a new and different way. The origin of every good idea, and all things, began with God. The psalmist celebrated the fact that God is the source of everything in creation (cf. Psalm 104: 24; 30-31, NLT). God, according to Job, is intimately involved with the design of our human bodies, and His care for us is unequal (cf. Job 10:10-12, NLT). God’s sovereignty is to be honored as we make life’s decisions. In our study book, IF, author and pastor Mark Batterson explains it this way: “Destiny is not a mystery; it’s a decision. And how we make those decisions determines our what if possibilities. When we come to decision making…we need the help of the Holy Spirit.” Our what if possibilities are assured when we acknowledge God’s place in our lives (cf. Psalm 100:3, NLT)! The Danger of “Narrow Framing” - Pastor Batterson says that one of the great enemies to our what if thinking is “narrow framing.” He says this is when we “define our choices too narrowly.” When we’re facing a dilemma, often there are several options. If we fail to seek the Holy Spirit’s discernment, those options could remain elusive. Also, narrow-minded thinking often is the result of old perceptions. The religious leaders who refused to accept the visually impaired man’s healing, provides an example of this failure (cf. John 9:18, NLT; Also, John 9: 30-34, NLT). Pastor Batterson says, “If you aren’t careful, past experience can become a barrier to what if.” He explains further that benefiting from a miracle that occurs, is “to believe God for the next miracle – an even bigger and better one.” Believe God for more! John 9:30-34, NLT “Why, that’s very strange!” the man replied. “He healed my eyes, and yet you don’t know where He comes from? We know that God doesn’t listen to sinners, but He is ready to hear those who worship Him and does His will. Ever since the world began no one has been able to open the eyes of someone born blind. If this man were not from God, He couldn’t have done it.” “You were born a total sinner!” they answered. “Are you trying to teach us?” And they threw hm out of the synagogue. John 3:4; 6-7, NLT “What do you mean?” exclaimed Nicodemus. “How can an old man go back into his mother’s womb and be born again?” “Humans can reproduce only human life, but the Holy Spirit gives birth to spirit- ual life. So don’t be surprised when I say, ‘You must be born again.’ John 14:17, NLT “He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth. The world cannot re- ceive Him, because it isn’t looking for Him and doesn’t recognize Him. But you know Him, because He lives with you now, and later will be in you.” Matthew 19:26, NLT “Jesus looked at them intently and said, “Humanly speaking, it is impossible. But with God every- thing is possible.” Proverbs 18:15, NLT “Intelligent people are always ready to learn. Their ears are open to knowledge.” Increasing Our Options– Pastor Batterson further suggests that we’re often hampered in our ability to resolve many of the issues in our lives because we refuse to think beyond the proverbial box. Batterson says further, “Two-dimensional thinking is thinking outside the box… It is the Holy Spirit who helps us get outside the box and escape [these] limitations.” The extensive conversation Nicodemus had with Jesus helped him move beyond the narrow path he travelled in. Jesus helped Nicodemus see and understand the reality of a “new birth” (cf. John 3:4; 6-7, NLT). Nicodemus could not conceive of a spiritual birth as being different from a physical birth. Moreover, based on his assumptions and preconceived notions, Nicodemus assumed age was an impediment to experiencing a spiritual birth. Jesus told Nicodemus that his thoughts were too narrow, and that his thinking could be changed through the Spirit. Pastor Batterson says, “The Holy Spirit widens our options to include any and every what if.” Education and Revelation – There are some issues in our lives that can “only be solved,” as Batterson says, “in the presence of God.” Our engagement with God will help us clarify the issues confronting us, and lead to a revelation of His purpose. Pastor Batterson encourages Christians to, “Go ahead and get an education, but you need the Holy Spirit’s help with or without it.” Jesus told the people that many things we attempt to do within the human sphere are unattainable, but when we seek God’s help, what if becomes possible (cf. Matthew 19:26, NLT). Seeking discernment through the Holy Spirit, along with education, can broaden our thinking (cf. John 14:17, NLT; Also, Proverbs 18:15, NLT). _________________KEY IDEA __________________________ What We Believe “Our what if possibilities will be limited if we have a narrow view.” 1. What we create should reveal something about the Creator. 2. Some problems can only be solved in the presence of God. 3. Along with education, seek the revelation of God’s purpose.

Word Alive! © 2019 Tuesday, 28 May, 2019 IF: …God’s What If Possibilities Study Help: Mark Batterson, IF: … God’s What If Possibilities Concord Baptist Church of Boston in Milton Conley Hughes, Jr., Senior Pastor (IF, Chapter 17) Devotional Time: If, (pp. 156-165) The Necessity of Patience – Lesson 17 provides us with insights into an understanding of the essential quality of patience, as one of the most important spiritual virtues. The New Testament word for patience is derived from the Greek term, hupomeno, which means “to stay under;” “to remain;” or, “to abide.” The Apostle Paul taught early Christians that being patient in the present, secures the fulfillment of our future expectations (cf. Romans 8:25, NIV). From the earliest times, people have demonstrated an inability to be patient, especially in the present moments of their lives (cf. Psalm 37:7, NLT). In the study book, IF, author and pastor Mark Batterson comments on the work of Richard Thayer. In asking a simple question to groups of people, Mr. Thayer concluded that as humans, “we become more impatient [when a decision or action must be taken] in a shorter time frame.” Pastor Batterson says the opposite of this is good news: “the longer you wait, the easier it is to wait a little longer.” The Apostle James instructed first century Christians to endure. He assured them that there are rewards for being patient, and in enduring trials (cf. James 1:12, NLT). The Dividends of Patience – Pastor Batterson says that when you are willing to wait on the Lord, “you’re strengthening your patience muscle.” Caleb, who is mentioned in the Old Testament, was one of the insurgents sent to spy and survey the Promised Land. Caleb was the eldest among them, and did not receive the parcel of land promised to him until forty-five years later! The scripture emphasizes that Caleb had “a different attitude than the others have (cf. Numbers 14:23-25, NLT).” Caleb’s patience and optimism about possessing the land provided him with great dividends and blessings (cf. Joshua 14:10-13, NLT). Time Compartments in Patience – One of the greatest impediments to patience is a person’s inability to handle too much at the same time. Multi-tasking could inevitably distract a person away from the “most important” pursuits, causing emotional and spiritual disarray. Pastor Batterson offers this advice: “…one key to accomplishing things is breaking them down in manageable and measurable steps.” What can be called “time compartments” is important for our exercise of patience. James admonishes the Christians of his day to “wait and be patient” as they anticipated the Lord’s return. James uses as an analogy the patience of the farming community in enduring various seasons and weather conditions, as they eagerly awaited the harvest. These time intervals are as important to Christians as they were to the farmers (cf. James 5:7-8, NLT). Pastor Batterson says, “…the present is the point at which time touches eternity.” Time Matters – Patience teaches us that time really matters to God, and it should matter to us. David said, “My times are in Your hand (cf. Psalm 31:15, NKJV).” The Hebrew word ‘eth (ayth) means “now” and “when.” The New Living Translation says, “My future is in your hand.” In either instance, the scriptures describe and emphasize the “importance” of time in our lives. Pastor Batterson says patience has taught him much about time. He says, “…years of ministry [have] taught me to be genuinely grateful for delays and detours. God won’t get you where God wants you to go until you’re good and ready – He loves you too much to do that to you!” God’s timing is always for our best! His time will yield good results (cf. Galatians 6:9, NLT). _________________KEY IDEA __________________________ What We Believe “The longer you wait, the easier it is to wait a little longer.” Our patience is strengthened through waiting. Patience is like compounded interest. It can yield some miraculous dividends. If you’re exercising as if faith, things will come to pass! Numbers 14:21-25 C’td., NLT land. Now turn around, and don’t go toward the land where the Amalekites and Canaanites live. Tomorrow you must set out for the wilderness in the direction of the Red Sea.” Joshua 14 10-13, NLT “Now, as you can see, the Lord has kept me alive and well as He promised for all these forty-five years since Moses made this pro- mise – even while Israel wandered in the wilderness. Today I am eighty-five years old. I am as strong now as I was when Moses sent me on that journey, and I can still travel and fight as well as I could then. So give ne the hill country that the Lord promised me. You will remember that as scouts we found the descendants of Anak living there in great, walled towns. But if the Lord is with me, I will drive them out of the land, just as the Lord said. So Joshua blessed Caleb son of Jeph- unneh and gave Hebron to him as his portion of land.” James 5:7-8, NLT “Dear brothers and sisters, be pati- ent as you wait for the Lord’s return. Consider the farmers who patiently wait for the rains in the fall and in the spring. They eagerly look for the valuable harvest to ripen. You, too, must be patient. Take courage, for the coming of the Lord is near.” Galatians 6:9, NLT “So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up.” Romans 8:25, NIV “But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently.” Psalm 37:7, NLT “Be still in the presence of the Lord, and wait patiently for Him to act. Don’t worry about evil people who prosper or fret about their wicked sche- mes.” James 1:12, NLT “God blesses those who patiently endure testing and temptation. Afterward they will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love Him.” Numbers 14:23-25, NLT “They will never see the land I swore to give their ancestors. None of those who have treated me with contempt will ever see it. But my servant Caleb has a different attitude than the others have. He has remained loyal to me, so I will bring him into the land he explored. His descendants will possess their full share of that
